The history of the Guaymas/San Carlos area dates back over 2,000 years, beginning with early Indian inhabitants. The fierce Guaymenas Indian tribe created enough resistance against Spanish outsiders that the area was not penetrated by Europeans until the 18th century. The Yaqui, Guaimas, Guaymenas and Seri tribes lived in this arid coastal region, drawing their strength from the waters of the Sea of Cortez and the imposing figure of the Tetakawi mountain.

This majestic natural landmark contained the mystical powers of spirits of valiant warriors that defended these shores for centuries. When Spaniards finally came to the area, the mountain was named 'Tetas de Cabra', or 'tits of a goat', because of its unique shape.

Santuario en el Mar was originally built in 2 phases (original construction in 1966 with an addition in 1976), and was for many years the only villa in the area. The original owners, Hank and Cosette Wild, supported local artists and orphanages in the area. An American/French couple from Los Angeles, Hank and Cosette spent 10 years building their dream home by the sea. | |

Cosette's background as an artist is apparent as one walks through the extensive grounds, with shell art and detailed tile work throughout. Visitors are greeted at the gate with Cosette's elaborate shell murals that depict local folklore and mythology. |

San Carlos has been the location site of many movies beginning in the 1960's, and on occasion the Wild's would entertain the producers and directors that would be in town. Hank had many friends in Hollywood, and for a time their home in San Carlos was known for the lavish parties they would throw We can only imagine who was on the guest list at these soirees! Some of the movies filmed in San Carlos include Catch 22 (the picture that spawned the 'Mash' series), Lucky Lady (starring Liza Minelli), and Camaroneros (a Mexican production staring Erick del Castillo). San Carlos can be seen in major films today as well; in The Mask of Zorro (starring Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins & Catherine Zeta Jones) the Titas de Cabra mountain can be seen in the distance.
San Carlos is home to over 800 species of fish and 400 species of shellfish found in this unique area. The white beaches are continually washed by gentle waves with high desert mountains surrounding the bays and natural harbor.
